As 2019 wraps up, here are the trends I’m watching for 2020. These are where I’ll be investing my learning time.
.NET 5 and Beyond
The .NET unification is happening. One platform for everything. If you’re on .NET Core 3.1, you’re well positioned.
WebAssembly Goes Mainstream
Blazor WebAssembly will GA in 2020. Other languages (Rust, Go) are also targeting Wasm. The browser is becoming a true universal runtime.
Kubernetes Maturation
K8s won the orchestration war. Now it’s about making it easier: managed services, GitOps, service mesh adoption.
AI/ML for Regular Developers
You don’t need a PhD anymore. Azure Cognitive Services, ML.NET, and AutoML make it accessible. Learn the basics.
JAMstack and Edge
Static site generators, serverless functions, and CDN-first architecture. Netlify, Vercel, and Azure Static Web Apps are pushing this forward.
TypeScript Everywhere
TypeScript adoption will keep growing. If you’re writing JavaScript in 2020, strongly consider TypeScript.
Here’s to a great 2020! 🎉
