Looking Back at 2020: A Developer’s Perspective

2020. What a year. It’s a year that will happen defined by the global pandemic, but within our tech bubble, it was also a year of massive acceleration and resilience. As we close it out, let’s reflect on what changed for software engineers.

The Remote revolution

In March, the world went remote. For many developers, this was a dream come true; for others, a nightmare of isolation. We learned that “working from home” is different during a crisis. We adapted to Zoom fatigue, asynchronous communication, and the importance of written documentation. Tools like Miro, Slack, and Teams became our virtual offices.

Tech Milestones

  • .NET 5: Microsoft delivered on the promise of unification.
  • Vue 3: A mature, performant update to a beloved framework.
  • Apple Silicon (M1): In late 2020, Apple changed the hardware game. Compiling code on an ARM chip became mainstream.
  • GPT-3: OpenAI released the API, giving us a glimpse of the AI revolution to come (foreshadowing!).

Community

Conferences went virtual. While we missed the hallway tracks, events became accessible to thousands who couldn’t travel before. The Global Azure Bootcamp, Build, Ignite – all free and online. This improved global inclusion significantly.

Personal Note

It’s been a year of learning new patterns (Blazor, Bicep) and refining old ones. If you survived 2020, you can handle any deployment Friday. Here’s to a hopeful 2021.
